2ND ANNUAL BOB SANDERS WEEKEND ENCOURAGES YOUTH TO CHASE THEIR DREAMS

During the second annual Bob Sanders Weekend, held February 26th-28th, Sanders brought something for everyone back to his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania. On Friday, February 26, 2010, Bob Sanders Chasing Dreams Foundation dedicated two technology centers complete with new desktop computers and printers at McKinley Elementary School and Wilson Middle School in Erie. Both schools, attended by Sanders growing up in Erie, were in need of new equipment to enable students to keep up with growing global technology. These donations will benefit nearly 1,000 students this year, and the many that will use them in future years. In partnership with the Erie BayHawks, expERIEnce Children’s Museum and Erie Zoo, Bob Sanders Chasing Dreams Foundation provided opportunities for all Erie residents to enjoy free fun and educational activities with their families throughout the Weekend.
Included in the events open to the public for the Weekend, Bob Sanders Chasing Dreams Foundation sponsored free admission for all Erie residents to the expERIEnce Children’s Museum on February 27th and free admission to the Erie Zoo on Sunday, February 28th. Both venues offered additional activities including face-painting, crafts and even birthday cake in honor of Bob’s special day taking place earlier in the week. In addition, the first 500 attendees at each facility received a complimentary ticket to the Erie BayHawks game on March 5th courtesy of the Foundation.

The Children’s Museum was alive with energy on Saturday with hundreds of guests taking advantage of the free opportunity to visit. Children—and some adults—got their faces painted by volunteers, made Native American-inspired "dream catchers," and were able to color their own version of an Indianapolis Colts helmet to wear for the day. Sanders even picked up a paintbrush to assist one young Museum visitor get in the spirit of the day. Those in attendance were even able to share some of their gratitude with Sanders and his Foundation through a wall-sized "thank you" note made available by the Museum for guests to sign. Sanders also had a chance to personally read the notes and explore the three floors of activities that the expERIEnce Children’s Museum has to offer.
On Sunday, February 28th, more than 4,000 people arrived early at the Erie Zoo for their first opportunity of the season to visit the animals. The most popular exhibit of the day was the orangutans, including a new baby boy named Ollie. Sanders personally met two of the Zoo’s giraffes and explored several of the other exhibits during his visit. With the help of local Tim Horton’s franchisees, guests at the Zoo were able to warm up with free coffee and "Tim Bits." In addition, the Zoo offered special discounts at their concession stands, face painting and special animal shows in their "Kids Zoo." According to Zoo officials, Bob Sanders Weekend has now become synonymous with opening day at the Zoo and the first day of the season guests can return to visit the animals.
Special thank you to Jeff Urraro of Urraro Gallery for his photography service throughout Bob Sanders Weekend.
